Is Pedigree dog food good or bad for your dog?

For an example, I have provided a picture of the ingredient list of Pedigree's puppy chow. Other types only vary slightly.

Most of Pedigree's foods are grain based. As you can see, ground corn is the first ingredient. Since the ingredients are listed by quantity, this means that the majority of the food is grain based. A meat based food is preferred but still, this is not bad.

The only other negative of this food is the use of by-products. This can be seen by the second ingredient, poultry by-product meal. A by-product is when a food uses the left overs of an animals including bones, organs, etc. This won't necessarily harm the dog but, would not be as beneficial as plain poultry meal, in this case.

On the other hand, Pedigree also has some positive aspects.

Propylene glycol is not a listed ingredient. This ingredient, which is also one of the main ingredients of anti-freeze, can cause problems with red blood cell count.

Another ingredient not listed is beet pulp. This is used in some dog foods for odd reasons, hardening dog stool. But anyway, long term consumption can make dogs more prone to liver or kidney problems.

Both of these ingredients are usually common in cheaper dog foods.

So overall, Pedigree is a semi-healthy brand that I would recommend if you want a healthy food, on a budget.
